Pregs Govender is widely respected and admired as someone deeply committed to the development of South Africa as a just and humane democracy, concerned in particular with the rights of women and the poor in our society. As an ANC MP in the first parliament after 1994, she grew to prominence through her work on the Women’s Budget and as head of the Women’s Committee. She was not afraid to stand up to the party and voice her own views on such matters as the arms deal and the government’s handling of the AIDS pandemic. It was not long before she resigned as an MP and left parliament. Since then she has continued with her public work through other avenues and has broadened her concerns to embrace green and other global issues. She has the ability to open up closed debates, to bring fresh and invigorating perspectives into play, to tell the truth fearlessly in a way that frees both her and her opponents. She is, like Antjie Krog and Mamphela Ramphele, one of those “truth-tellers” whom we both need and admire.

Love and Courage tells the story of her life, a life of real commitment and often insubordination to the powers that be. It provides too the “inside story” of her part in some of the controversial debates within the ANC on issues like the arms deal and HIV/AIDS. In this way she develops her own thoughts on how power ought to be exercised and from where the true sources of lasting power derive.
