Garden Route Guide

The Garden Route is a flat, wave-cut platform along the Cape coast in the shadow of beautiful mountains. Discover fascinating biodiversity, and enjoy an abundance of outdoor activities in the area.

The 'Garden Route' was conceived over 50 years ago to promote the diverse and beautiful coastal plain that lies between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains on the north, and the Indian Ocean on the south.

The 'Garden' varies greatly as the magic of the 140 kilometre route unfolds. Low in height, but dense in species, pristine fynbos dunes and cliffs merge with towering indigenous forests. A few gentle rivers meander on lower plains, while many easterly rivers cut massive, steep-sided gorges through the spectacular mountains. Plunging shoreline cliffs interspace with soft, sandy beaches in half-heart-shaped bays, linked by boulders and pebbles thrown up by the strength of the ocean over millennia.

The guide provides integrated, user-friendly information about fauna and flora, history, geology, archaeology, culture, the environment and much more. Detailed maps and grids indentify a wide range of facilities, with places of interest and loads of 'things-to-do' and 'places-to-see'.
