Description

Cultivated Plants of Southern Africa is a must-have for botanists, nurserymen, landscapers, horticulturalists, ardent gardeners, students, lecturers and libraries. The book is a listing of almost 9000 kinds of plants known to be cultivated in southern Africa, or to have been tried here. The information is derived from a database containing details mainly of specimens archived in the National Herbarium, Pretoria, but also including records of specimens kept in numerous other collections in the region.

Each entry in the checklist includes the scientific name and approximate place of origin of the plant, and common names where known. For each genus and family references are given to literature that has been found useful for identifications in the National Herbarium.

This is the only listing of its kind in the world to be based on specimens rather than trade catalogues, and it will be used not only in southern Africa but throughout the tropics and subtropics.

This latest compilation is a masterpiece of plant knowledge; computer proficiency; familiarity with the world's publications; language skills (English, Afrikaans, German, Latin, Russian, Serbian, French and Spanish) – and patience!
