As you open the pages of this, the third Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award anthology, an open-throated choir greets you in celebration. Those reclaiming the tongue that has been lost, refusing to be silenced, are defiant and triumphant. They sing on behalf of the voiceless. Rich, powerful South African voices are speaking in our different languages to articulate their experiences, the private and political, the contemporary and historic. This book brings South African poetry lovers, those who read and those who write, a portal to the richest of our talent. These outpourings have been prompted by the banalities and catastrophes of daily existence, great and small. The words enable South Africans to digest what happens here and grant foreigners a compelling insight into the country's diverse people. The Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award is supported by the European Union and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

About the poets/judges

Kobus Moolman accepted the honour for his poem 'Daily Duty' at a prize-giving ceremony at the Poetry Africa Festival in Durban on Saturday night, 19 October. Second place went to Vonani Bila for his entry 'Memory'. Third place went to Nedine Moonsamy for her poem 'me=mycelium=me'. The winning, second-place and third-place poets win R6 000, R3 000 and R1 000 respectively.

The jury was comprised of distinguished South African poets Johann de Lange, Goodenough Mashego, and Liesl Jobson. Head judge Dr Mongane Wally Serote chose the winner.

The three winning poems, as well as a selection of poetry entered for the competition, have been published to coincide with the award ceremony. The Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Anthology Vol III honours the spirit of the legendary intellectual giant, Sol Plaatje, the activist, linguist, translator, novelist, journalist and leader.
